Actress, comedian, stand-up, television personality Sarah Silverman has just written a book. It's edgy, and within we can detect notes of Hemingway and Dostoevsky. The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption and Pee is of course really, really funny. And besides being really, really funny, it is serious in its discussion of her own deeply personal issues such as depression and bedwetting, and this makes the reader laugh a lot. She looks at comedy, comedians, what works, and what doesn't. And she talks about her ironic humor, which critics either love or find outrageous.
Read, in Sarah's own words from her Amazon author page, her take on being a "serious author." I'm an author now! Like Ernest Hemingway and Fyodor Dostoevsky! When I was asked to provide text for an author page, I decided to approach it in a scholarly manner, because that's what authors do. I looked to other author pages for inspiration, and I learned so much. For example, while Hemingway and Dostoevsky do not have their own author pages on Amazon.com, Paris Hilton does. And so does former teenage porn star and multi-tasking fellatrix, Traci Lords. Hemingway and Dostoevsky might be wondering, quite literally, "Whom do I have to blow to get my own author page?" If someone had a cruel sense of humor, they might respond to Hemingway, "How about your head off? Oh wait – you already DID that!" But such a remark would be in bad taste, and as a serious author, I'm above all that.
What could be truer than that?
Sandra Tsing Loh is a Writers Bloc favorite—we love her books, from "Mother on Fire" to "A Year in Van Nuys," and everything else. We love her "Loh Down on Science" on KPCC, as well as "The Loh Life." She, like Sarah, loves to stir things up: last summer, Sandra's piece in The Atlantic Monthly, called "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off," triggered countless articles and blogs about her conclusion that marriage is, well, overrated.
