Perhaps the only person not surprised by Barack Obama's presidential victory is Obama himself. David Remnick, Editor of The New Yorker, has written a biography of President Obama, written with his customary gift of sweeping drama, intimacy and revelation. Remnick's book, The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama, includes interviews with Obama's family, political colleagues and rivals, as well as with the President himself. Remnick reveals how Obama set for himself the goal of becoming the nation's first African American President, and steeled his early career in the often brutal arena of Chicago politics for that achievement. He interviews touchstones of Obama controversies, such as Reverend Jeremiah Wright, and activist Bill Ayers, as well as Obama's close associates. As Remnick tells us the story of Barack Obama, a story that we thought we knew but becomes complete here, Remnick relates the spectacular rise of Obama to the drama and the dream of the civil rights movement.

Lawrence O'Donnell knows the intricacies of the inner sanctum of government well. He was, after all, an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer of The West Wing. O'Donnell occasionally sits in for Keith Olbermann on MSNBC, and frequently appears as a political consultant on the cable network as well. O'Donnell served in the Clinton Administration as the Democratic Chief of Staff for the United States Senate Finance Committee on Finance, as well as on the Environment and Public Works Committee.
